Wisdom Teeth Removal
Most people have their wisdom teeth removed in their late teens or twenties — before the teeth cause crowding, infection, or damage to nearby roots. We handle the entire process in-house, with sedation options that keep the experience as easy as possible.
Why it matters
Benefits
- Done by Dr. Hall in-house — no referral to a separate oral-surgery clinic.
- Oral sedation or IV sedation available — sleep through it if you'd prefer.
- 3D CT planning before surgery for precise, predictable extractions.
- Most cases are completed in a single appointment.
- Detailed aftercare plan and direct phone access if you have post-op questions.
What to expect
The process
- 01
Consultation and 3D scan
A panoramic x-ray or 3D CT shows the position of each wisdom tooth, the roots, and nearby nerves. Dr. Hall walks you through what to expect and recommends sedation options based on the complexity.
- 02
Choose your comfort level
Local freezing only, oral sedation (a pill before your visit), or IV sedation (asleep through the procedure). We help you pick based on anxiety, complexity, and recovery preferences.
- 03
The procedure
Most cases run 45–90 minutes. You won't feel anything during the extraction — and with IV sedation, you won't remember anything either.
- 04
Recovery
Plan for 2–3 days of rest. We send you home with a clear written aftercare plan, prescriptions if needed, and a direct number to reach the clinic if anything feels off.
- 05
Follow-up
A short check-in visit about a week later confirms everything is healing the way it should.
When wisdom teeth need to come out
Wisdom teeth (third molars) usually appear between ages 17 and 25. For some lucky people they erupt cleanly and never cause problems. For most, there isn’t enough room in the jaw — and that’s when they cause trouble:
- Impaction — the tooth is stuck under the gum or bone and can’t erupt properly.
- Crowding — pressure from emerging wisdom teeth can shift the rest of your teeth, undoing previous orthodontic work.
- Infection (pericoronitis) — partially erupted teeth trap food and bacteria under the gum, leading to painful infections.
- Cysts or damage to neighbouring teeth — long-term, impacted wisdom teeth can damage adjacent molar roots.
Early removal — typically in your late teens or early twenties — is easier and heals faster than waiting until problems develop later in life.
What makes the experience easier
The thing most patients dread isn’t the surgery — it’s the unknown. We try to remove the unknown entirely:
- Show you the scan. You’ll see exactly where each tooth is, what the roots look like, and where the nerves run.
- Walk through the plan step by step. No surprises about what’s about to happen.
- Offer real sedation options. Many clinics in Calgary refer wisdom-teeth cases out to oral surgeons because they don’t do IV sedation in-house. We do — and we plan it around your comfort, not around our schedule.
- Stay reachable after surgery. You’ll leave with a direct number to call if anything feels off.

FAQ
Questions we hear most often
- Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?
- No. If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted, healthy, and you can clean them properly, they can stay. We only recommend removal when they're impacted, partially erupted, causing crowding, or showing signs of infection or decay. We'll be honest with you either way.
- How much does wisdom teeth removal cost in Calgary?
- Cost depends on how many teeth are being removed, how impacted they are, and your sedation choice. We provide a complete written quote at your consultation and direct-bill most insurance plans.
- Will I be put to sleep?
- It's your choice. Local freezing alone is enough for some patients. Oral sedation makes you drowsy and relaxed but awake. IV sedation puts you in a sleep-like state where you won't remember the procedure. Dr. Hall is certified in IV sedation.
- How long is recovery?
- Most people are back to normal activities within 3–5 days. Mild swelling and stiffness for the first 48 hours is normal. Strenuous exercise and smoking should wait about a week to avoid dry socket.
- What is dry socket?
- It's a complication where the blood clot in the extraction site dislodges before healing. Causes sharp pain a few days after surgery. Easily treated in-office — and largely preventable with the aftercare instructions we send you home with.
- Can I drive myself home?
- Yes after local freezing only. No after any sedation — you'll need a ride. We'll confirm your ride before your appointment if sedation is planned.
